Any screening programme should be evaluated in four main areas: frequency and severity of the disease; sensitivity, specificity, performance and cost of diagnosis; effectiveness of management; administrative structure.^[43] In France, a programme based on IgG seroconversion is in operation and similar schemes have been promoted in other countries.^[44] Further research is required to establish the harm : benefit ratio of screening for toxoplasmosis in pregnancy before the diversion of scarce funds from other health projects can be justified.
